Last week I attended an event and met someone who said to me that she was reticent about tarot readings because of an experience she had: she had a reading, and nothing the reader predicted “came true.” Because of her experience she was not only disappointed, but skeptical about the value a Tarot reading could really provide. My answer to her concerns took full shape at about 5 o’clock the following morning when I woke up and furiously scribbled notes about the nature of the relationship between tarot and “the future”, and how we can adopt a perspective of this relationship that empowers us, rather than disappoints us.
What “predictions” about the future really mean
I think that collectively we have a very skewed understanding of what a so-called “prediction” actually is. Predictions, or projections (I prefer the latter), whether enunciated by a tarot reader, a clairvoyant, an intuitive, and everything in between, all have the same basic structure: they are statements which reflect the nature of the individual’s current ‘magnetic point of attraction’. Predictions or projections are really saying this: “Based on the energetic matrix of your intentions, thought patterns and emotions with respect to a particular thing, this is the path that you are on, and this is what you are likely to experience going forward. This is the direction in which you are headed.”
If a reading strongly indicates that a new job or career path is on the horizon for you, that is said because it is reflective of your current point of attraction. In other words, a new job is in your field. Based on your energetic input at the moment, and the momentum your energetic input has gathered, this is the strongest probability. When intuitives of all persuasions tap into this kind of information, (ethically and honestly), they are always tapping into what the strongest probability is. There are numerous probabilities, dependent on the choices that the individual makes, and his or her overall energetic input.
The unique value that a Tarot reading provides is that it allows us to understand what is “in our field.” It allows us to understand how we are using our energy. It allows us to better understand the relationship between our energetic states and the things we want. It allows us to understand how we are meeting our lives. A tarot reading holds up a mirror to our inner vibrational reality. And as creators of our experience, this is the kind of information that we want to have, so that we can make the necessary inner energetic shifts which bring about a far more enhanced and improved outer experience. Tarot is not special: it does not stand above and apart from the fundamental mechanics and laws of energy.
Because we have not been collectively taught to look at our lives through the lens of energy, we are perplexed when predictions “don’t come true”. We are perplexed because we don’t understand the energetic point from which we are creating. We don’t know how our energy is evolving in relation to specific aspects of our lives, and we don’t know when we hold energetic states which undermine our more conscious intentions.
Not because your reader said it…
I realize this might sound a little counter-intuitive and strange because I myself am a reader, but here’s a little thing for you: don’t hang your coat on the fact that a reader ‘said it’. Hanging your coat on something because someone said it is giving away your power and abdicating your responsibility as the sovereign creator that you are. The value of a tarot reading is that it gets you to reflect on how you are using your energy, and to make your own assessment of whether that use is healthy and productive. A tarot reading isn’t valuable because someone said things that you appear not to know.
Don’t passively wait for what your reader said to “come true.” Don’t sit and wait for your new job because it is “ordained.” You still have to interact with life, and take positive, inspired action in relation to your new job. I have to qualify this a little bit. There are times when you can’t see the journey between where you presently are and what your Tarot reader has projected. There are times when your reader has projected something that you would like to experience, but you don’t know what the journey is between where you presently stand and the realization of it. You don’t exactly know “what to do” to dance out to meet this wonderful thing that is in your field. At this point, you go back to looking at your life through a vibrational lens: “I am going to stay in the energy of a new loving, mutually beneficial relationship. I’m going to enjoy thinking about it.” “I’m going to enjoy anticipating this new job, and how I’ll get to use my talents and skills in ways that excite me. I’m going to have fun looking at people whose talents I admire, and who remind me of my own potential.”
Call in your Higher MinD
At this point, you say “dear Higher Mind, dear Field of Energy, dear Spirit, dear The Parts of Me That Know, dear Greater Self, dear Greater Me, dear Whatever, I really enjoyed the insight and clarity from that Tarot reading, and I enjoyed knowing what is in my field, I enjoyed knowing more about this probability that I’m interacting with, but I really have no idea how to physically “get” from here to there. I have no idea how this thing that I think I’d really enjoy would actually arrive. How about this agreement: I’ll stay receptive, and I’ll wait for you to give me the signals and intuitive impulses to navigate forward. I won’t be too fussed about it.
Maybe things don’t have to work out exactly how my reader said it might. I really liked what she said, but if you want to improve upon that probability, and make it even better, I’m open to that too. I know life is dynamic, and that my creative process is dynamic and always evolving. Please also remind me to not be disappointed if it looks like things aren’t “going anywhere”, or that what I want isn’t “coming true”. I know that while this probability gets even better or improves, sometimes it can look to my physical eyes that it isn’t working out. I also know if I begin to get really hung up and disappointed, I’m probably not going to hear the signals that you’re sending. In the meantime, I’ll just stay cool. I know you don’t want me to settle, and that you have my best, best, best, interest in mind. Thanks.”
From a broader perspective
We are collectively in such a time of upshift, change and flux, that it can be quite unsettling. Because of the type of energies that we are collectively integrating and contending with, it means that there are distinct jumps in timelines or probabilities as the individual steps into his or her “soul mission” in a bigger way. This often means a departure from more familiar experience into future lives that can look radically different from what we expected. This is why we cannot hang on to projections about the future for dear life. We have to learn how to become more fluid, and to respond to our own inner changes in energy. We have to first and foremost, and above all, become more intimately familiar with our inner selves, as opposed to anything a reader “said’’ about “the future.” Tarot readings can help us to strengthen this connection to our inner selves and to gracefully navigate these kinds of changes. But we ourselves have to set up this kind of framework for empowerment, rather than invest in the old paradigm of “predictions coming true.”
A guidance-centred approach to tarot reading
The “purpose” of a reading ultimately is to receive clarity from your inner guidance. A tarot reader facilitates that process. Whatever external events “come true” in the future, your inner guidance will always give you the most appropriate suggestions and guidelines for right action.
The purpose of a reading is to put you in touch with the knowingness of your spirit – the Grand You. It is to make you more impeccable as the sovereign creator that you are. By putting you in touch with your own inner knowingness, a tarot reading is meant to help you find your greatest alignment, and to create from that place. From this place of inner alignment with your spirit, you are in a position to create an enriching, joyful, meaningful and purposeful future.
