As we have expanded our awareness of what the human physical body actually is – a beautifully coherent and sophisticated bio-energetic system – our concepts of what disease is have also expanded. We now are integrating the understanding that all disease and illness stem from the unresolved issues held in the emotional body. Disease and illness are fundamentally energetic, and our physical bodies, as the bio-energetic vehicles that they are, mirror our energetic states. Of course, this more integrated understanding of the physical body has had radical implications for conventional medicine, effectively turning it on its head: illness is not random; health of the physical body is always tied to states of energetic flow/blockage, and the physical body is a barometer of these inner energetic states.
Medical psychic-intuitives have the ability to assess the human chakric system, and relate emotionally difficult events and individually held belief systems to the current state of the physical body. These kinds of psychic-intuitive interventions have also taken us beyond third dimensional understandings of linear time: present illnesses have been shown to be the energetic imprints of events within other dimensional realities and lifetimes. The body is a quantum, bio-energetic system, and cellular memory defies linear time.
The key upshot of these ‘new’ understandings of the body is this: adjustments to one’s energetic state directly impact the physical body. We can therefore support the healing of our physical bodies through interventions which take our energy as their principal point of departure. These interventions will often take the form of adjustments to our most deeply held belief systems. Our beliefs define the scope of our emotional-energetic experiences. Adjusting our beliefs is altering the blueprint which defines our energetic experience.
What does any of this have to do with Tarot?
Tarot is fundamentally a tool for reading energy. An insightful Tarot reading offers us a more intimate understanding of our beliefs, inner motivations, thoughts and feelings. Tarot can help us to begin a process of self-inventory – we can ask questions and pursue particular lines of inquiry which can assist us in understanding and dealing with our unresolved emotional energy. If unresolved emotional energy is the essential root of illness and disease, then Tarot becomes an extremely valuable tool for offering us perspectives which can assist us in resolving these energies, and which can help us to begin a process of physical healing.
When I began to have sciatic pain, the Tarot helped me to understand that I was experiencing this pain in my body because of the challenge I was experiencing in moving forward from the emotions surrounding the dissolution of a significant intimate relationship. I went to the doctor anyway, did all the relevant x-rays and third dimensional medical pokings and proddings, but I knew that the x-rays would reveal nothing wrong with my skeletal structure. The x-rays came back with nothing to show. I declined to pursue the doctor’s recommended physical therapy, and I made up my mind that there would be no more visits to the doctor.
Instead, I worked with the way in which my Tarot reading suggested I could move forward, and incorporated the energy that my reading suggested I needed most. My reading also showed me how strong, forthright self-expression would help me to ease my physical pain. I also used my yoga practice to support my healing process and to help me move and release stagnant emotional energy from my system. I marvelled at how amazing my body was in communicating to me – sciatic pain is pain in the hip and leg, and these are precisely the parts of the body that help us to move forward. How beautifully symbolic. My body showed me how I was holding myself back, and the Tarot helped me to deepen my understanding of the messages my body was trying to convey about my emotional state.
Because Tarot is a symbolic multidimensional tool, it was able to help me to deal with my pain using a multi-layered approach – it brought my self-expression and my physical pain into a relationship – one which I would not have seen without the gift of intuitive symbolic sight.
Tarot practitioners are understandably wary of reading on health issues. Depending on where we practice, the legal ramifications of these kinds of readings are extremely costly. Further, we simply do not consider ourselves health professionals. Any ethical reader will refer a client to the appropriate professional if the subject of the reading falls outside the scope of what the reader feels is appropriate to address. However, there is a place for Tarot in understanding the physical body as a bio-energetic ecology. Employing the Tarot as a tool for fostering physical health is about appropriate use of the Tarot for deeper self-understanding. Tarot can be part of a holistic approach toward understanding the health of our bodies as the energetic beings that we are.
